Venues for 2010 Canada 55+ Games demonstrate regional involvement
While the City of Brockville will of course be the centre of the Games, the Games venues extend well beyond the City limits!
One of the highlights of the 2010 Canada 55+ Games will be happening on Thursday August 26th during “Active Living Day.” St. Lawrence Park just west of Brockville's downtown core on King Street. The mini-marathon and (proposed) triathlon are scheduled to take place at tis venue. There are a number of activities being planned including an open water swim, beach volleyball, nature hikes, geocaching, fishing tournament, digital photography contest and cooperative games. These activities will also be available to seniors from the general public. More details are forthcoming on this single largest celebration of active seniors in Canada!
Further along the Parkway, Smuggler’s Glen Golf Course will be the site of the Games golf championships. Voted by the readers of Flagstick Golf Magazine in 2009 as the region’s “Best Public Golf Course” (over $45 green fee) the course design takes full advantage of the rugged Canadian Shield landscape of high granite cliffs, tall white pines and scenic elevated tees.
Nearby Gananoque will host the Games curling competitions at the Lou Jeffries Community Centre, as well as canoeing and kayaking at the Gananoque Canoe Club, offering the Games participants a variety of nearby lodging options as well as the town’s other recreational facilities.
The Games Five Pin Bowling competitions will be held at Gratton Bowling Lanes, located in the heart of Smiths Falls right alongside the Rideau Canal. With 16 lanes available and accommodation, restaurants and shopping just a few minutes away the venue is ideally situated to welcome the Games bowlers.
The Prescott Tennis Club will be the primary tennis venue, providing the Games participants with a splendid view of the mighty St. Lawrence River. With recently resurfaced courts, the PTC’s quality playing area and obliging volunteers will provide a memorable experience for all participants.
In Brockville, eight events are being held at St. Lawrence College; the Games hub and the site of the Athletes’ Village. Other sports venues in the City include the Memorial Centre and Youth Arena, Brockville and Area YMCA, St. Mary Catholic High School, Brockville Lawn Bowling Club and Thousand Islands Secondary School.
