Games Thank Media Partners
Submitted by: David P. Dargie - Games Chair

Hey Brockville and area! Time to start getting ready for the Canada 55+ Games when "Canada come to town" in less than 41 days. I hope that you have had the opportunity to see the two large signs advertising the 2010 Canada 55+ Games that have been erected at the entrance to St. Lawrence College, the site of our Athletes' Village. As well, the many posgters that are displayed around the city and in locations outside of Brockville are all inviting you to join us for the many events that are open to the public from August 23–28. All of these signs point to one thing¯the start of the Games is just around the corner!

Thanks to the partnership with the Morris Group and The Observer, we have been able to communicate with you on a weekly basis through these columns. I found it hard to believe that after this week, there will only be five more columns remaining before the Games begin! Writing these columns has been one of the methods we have used to "get the word out". I’d like to use this week’s column to look at and thank the many media partners who have been communicating our information to you.

As mentioned, the folks at The Observer have been supporters of our efforts taking over from our original print media partners, ButternutZe Publishing when the Brockville Voice was sold. ButternutZe continues to partner with us, publishing advertisements for our events in their Living in Brockville magazine, with the August issue featuring a cover story and advertisement on the 2010 Canada 55+ Games. ButternutZe will also be publishing our official Games Program, as well as the Opening/Closing Ceremonies’ Programs. Many thanks to Jeff, Beth and Mark at the Morris Group and Austin and Erin at The Observer; and to Jacqui and Dolly for your support at ButternutZe Publishing.

Hopefully you have heard our many radio announcements on 104.9 JR FM CHUM Brockville as well as the interviews with Bruce Wylie. Thanks to Grace and Dan, and all the producers and radio personalities at CHUM Brockville for making sure that our message reaches you with our invitation to the general public to participate. We are certainly blessed in this community to have 104.9 JR FM supporting ALL the community events that take place in our city and region.

BrockNews.ca has been our online news partner and you can see the many segments that we have produced by going to our Games website and linking to the BrockNews.ca site. It is very interesting to see how we have progressed from filming in the Games offices to moving outdoors "on location". Dale, the force behind BrockNews.ca, has been very accommodating in filming and preparing these spots for airing. Over the next few weeks, we are going on location to highlight some of the out-of-town venues that will host the Games. Look for our newest segment on Gananoque today at: www.brocknews.ca.

TV COGECO is our newest media partner and we have been filming some great information pieces for their community news program, The Source. Thanks to Matt, Steve, Ron and their production staff for joining our media team. You can see these segments by going to the TV Cogeco website: www.tvcogeco.com/brockville. TV Cogeco is also working with BrockNews.ca to provide the online program with equipment to broadcast the Games’ Opening Ceremonies on August 25, bringing two of our media sponsors together for what should prove to be an exciting event.

Giving out thanks in this column would not be complete without mentioning two more folks; one a Games staff member, the other a member of the Games Organizing Committee. Our Executive Director Laurence Bishop has done a superb job constructing and maintaining our website: www.brockville2010.ca. All the latest news and information related to the Games can be found on this site and the time and effort that LB has put into our site is invaluable! The second person is Hannelore Walther, our volunteer Director of Media and Communications. She has been working very hard to make sure that all our media partners have the information they need, as well as access to the people who are making the news for our Games. Her expertise and passion for this work has been very important to our success to date. Thanks to both of these folks for your hard work and dedication to task!

In next week's column, we will have important information to share with you about ticket sales for the three evenings of entertainment on the "Main Stage" of our 2000 seat marquee tent that will be located at the Athletes Village. Until next time, stay active!
