Games Invite Public to Evening Concerts
Submitted by: David P. Dargie

34 days to go before the start of the 2010 Canada 55+ Games and we have some great news for Brockville and area! You may have read or heard that our preliminary registration numbers are in and 1500+ participants are coming to the Games. In addition to the events organized for these participants, we are inviting the general public to take advantage of the great educational, entertainment, and celebratory events that will be such a big part of the Games.

Let's begin with our fantastic evening entertainment that will be taking place in the licensed, 2000-seat "Main Stage" marquee tent located at the Athletes’ Village at St. Lawrence College. Tickets are now on sale to the general public for the August 26, 27, and 28 evening events.

On August 26, we will welcome the Beach Party Boys to the "Main Stage". When it comes to summer music there is nothing like the Beach Boys music, and when it comes to tribute bands to bring you those "Good Vibrations" there is no other show like The Beach Party Boys.

The Beach Party Boys will take you on a "Surfin' Safari" in their "Little Deuce Coupe" and remind you what it's like to go "Surfin all over the USA" – not to mention having "Fun Fun Fun" with "California Girls" while listening to "I Get Around" with their special "Surfer Girl" … "Barbara Ann!" Their vocal harmonies, instrumentation and stage presence bring to life the very spirit of the Beach Boys themselves. Come join us on August 26 for a California Beach Party!

On August 27, Hotel California will play the 2010 Canada 55+ Games "Main Stage". Hotel California's tribute to the Eagles draws crowds of all ages with different musical styles: New Country, Classic Rock, and Dance, featuring hits such as "Life in the Fast Lane", "Take It Easy", "Desperado", "Get Over It" and many more. Their great harmonies have been enjoyed by audiences at festivals across North America and around the world.

Look what some famous people are saying about Hotel California: "You guys sounded great. Loved your vocals. We'd like to invite you to sing our last song on stage with us - Listen to the Music." - The Doobie Brothers, Blue Ash Sports Centre, Blue Ash, Ohio, in front of an audience of 80,000 people. Hotel California is sure to be a hit at the Games!

Our Closing Ceremonies on August 28 will feature an old friend, Freddy Vette and the Flames. The band’s "Jukebox Hits Live” show is an experience unlike any other oldies show. With the appealing sounds of a saxophone and a thumping stand-up bass, the eight-piece band led by entertainer Freddy Vette, pays tribute to the music that started it all, ‘50s Rock & Roll!

The band immerses the audience with music from Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Brenda Lee, The Shirelles and more. Freddy and his band rocked the house at Winterfest 2009 and he has promised an even better show for the Canada 55+ Games. Add in the Hands Firework show between the first and second acts and you have a "must see" evening of entertainment.

Tickets for the concerts are $20.00 each and are now on sale at the Brockville & District Tourism Office on Market Street. We are also currently negotiating to sell tickets at the Thousand Islands Mall. Stay tuned. There are also limited ticket packages for all three evenings of entertainment for $50.00.

We have all been reading and hearing about how the "older" generation wants some good "vintage" music for dancing and listening. Well Brockville, we have it all for you from August 26-28.

As a bonus, the Games are also offering a free concert by local favourites Healy & Orr on August 25, following the lighting of the GreenField Ethanol Cauldron by a very special guest. This concert will take place at medal plaza at the Athletes’ Village and will also be licensed.

These will be terrific concerts, so come out and have a great time. Even better, put together a group of your friends and bring your party to our party; and talk it up with your friends who are in the area and would like to be a part of these great evenings of entertainment. Come and party alongside the participants from the Canada 55+ Games and welcome our newest friends from across Canada to this great City of the Thousand Islands. Be there, or be square!

Please note that because both the Athletes’ Village and the "Main Stage" marquee tent will be licensed areas, anyone 19+ is invited to enjoy the dances/concerts.

For more information about the evening entertainment or any other aspect of the 2010 Canada 55+ Games, I invite you to visit our web site: www.brockville2010.ca for more information. Until next week, stay active!
